Mohair market indicator up more than 10% 14/03/2010

The second sale of the 2010 summer season took place in Port Elizabeth on 10 March with 161 130kg on offer, and featured an average market indicator increase of 10.7%.

Deon Saayman, general manager of Mohair SA says the mohair on offer was of better quality than the first sale and the resultant increase in prices reflects this. The adult market was once again characterized by fierce competition between ‘greasy’ exporters and ‘topmakers’, resulting in an 8% increase in fine adults and a 7% increase in the price of strong adults. Interestingly these prices were achieved despite a stronger South African currency.

The continuing fashion trend for mohair currently in Europe will in all likelihood increase the demand for kid mohair later in the season as kid mohair is still trading at considerably lower levels than a year ago. The strong performance of the mohair market is reflected in the 33% higher level of the average market indicator, when compared to the corresponding sale in 2009.

Compared to the previous sale, prices were as follows: Kids (summer) up 17%; Young goats (summer) up 7%; Fine adults up 8%; Strong adults up 7%; Average up 10.7%
